New to the Tallahassee scene is a Northern Italian steakhouse called Il Lusso.  This is a welcome addition to the fine dining options for the metro area, and a fantastic add to the downtown area.

Il Lusso Outside

Bright and airy, the details of the interior really provide the feeling of being in a much bigger city while retaining enough warmth to keep it from seeming too industrial. Wood floors are balanced with marble tile sections and cozy couches are in the waiting area.

Il Lusso interior

The bar was well-staffed and had some lovely custom cocktails. I got the Lavender Bliss (with vodka instead of the gin), and although pretty strong – it was tasty.

Il Lusso Lavender

The menu has a great selection of starters, and the entrees are focused on high-steaks and fresh pastas, with options for seafood, chicken or vegetarian entrees.

We began with the Blue Crab Arancini and a Caesar Salad (super sad that they were out of the Sweetbread starter, which looked delicious.) BUT the arancini were heavenly. I can’t tell you what was in the squid ink sauce but it was scrumptious. The caesar salad had a perfectly executed traditional dressing with toasted croutons.

Il Lusso Blue Crab Aracini

The a la carte sides looked exceptional, making it hard to choose, but we settled on the cauliflower with anchovy, parsley and lemon, and the rosemary potatoes with fondue sauce. The cauliflower was nicely charred although I could have used more of the flavorings (more anchovy and lemon please!). The potatoes had great herby flavor and the taleggio sauce provided a good balance.

As a splurge, we got the 24 oz (!) Prime Dry-Aged Cowboy Ribeye to share and a small portion of the Lamb Ragu Malfadine (ruffled noodle). Very pleased to see the option of small and large dishes of the pastas so that we could sample one.

First, the pasta was one of my favorites of the night. With a deconstructed lasagna vibe, the ragu was flavorful and rich and the pasta was a perfect al dente.

Il Lusso Lamb Ragu

And for the star of the show, here is the ribeye…perfectly cooked and the aging gave it a pleasant tang of flavor (reminiscent of parmagiano reggiano.)

Il Lusso Dry-aged Cowboy Ribeye

Conclusion: This is a great fine dining option, but with the cost (well justified with the quality of the ingredients and the location), but I am looking forward to trying the lunch menu so that I can eat there more often. (They have also hinted about brunch coming soon!) Either way, we will definitely be going back.

French Fry Corndog? Challenge accepted.

As a fan of Madison Social (especially their brunch), I’ve been curious about their new restaurant Township, whose menu seems to be perfect “gastropub” drinking food, honestly. Meats on a stick? Check! Salty breads with cheese dip? Check!

I knew I needed to make a plan to visit when they posted a pic of the most ridiculous hot dog, crusted in french fries and topped with beer cheese and Sriracha.

Township is located right across the street from MadSo, and also looks out on the FSU Intramural Fields and Doak Campbell Stadium. It is a great space with high ceilings and a very relaxed atmosphere. The menu is straight forward, divided in the categories of Cones, Bowls, Sticks, Buns and Feasts.

img_8202

For the beer lovers, the selection was widely varied and had some intriguing options.

I was able to sit for a minute in the garden area, waiting for my friend. So relaxing!

Thank goodness I could recruit @wakullawriter to assist me in sampling the menu. Below is the Mac N Beer Cheese Cone and the Shrimp Ceviche Tacos. Both delicious.

My fave was the Pork Belly Bites Cone, each bite had a lovely, caramelized glaze and were perfectly cooked (where they weren’t too fatty.) The bites were topped with a fresh and spicy kimchi.

And here is the monster…this “corn” dog was delicious. I was surprised that it wasn’t heavier, the potato crust was actually a great complement to the dog.

This was a great lunch, but I need to come back when I can sample the great drinks and hang out for longer.

I am continually jealous of this generation of college students for having such amazing food at their hangouts. (Sorry Guthrie’s!) But glad I can access them now that I can actually afford to have more than just fast food.

Off the beaten path, but worth it: Backwoods Crossing

One of my weaknesses is a solid (and verifiable!) farm-to-table restaurant. There are three main challenges with these type of businesses. If they really are farm-direct products, the cost is generally higher. “Farm fresh” doesn’t guarantee good flavor/cooking technique. And it can be very difficult to confirm that the food is from a local farmer.

We needed a good place to take my Dad for his birthday that was out closer to their side of town (East Side!), and I had heard great things about Backwoods Crossing a local “farm-to-table” restaurant. I figured it was a handy occasion to try them out (and to use family to sample more dishes.)

Backwoods Crossing seems to have accomplished the trifecta – verifiable fresh, local food, high quality and reasonable cost. With one garden immediately outside the building, you can see what is ready or harvest, and then those options are directly reflected in the vegetable options and the specials.

To start, the house salad was fresh and simple. The balsamic vinaigrette had a good balance, and the meal started off on a solid note.

Daughter #1 got a sandwich with grilled chicken, apple and brie. Really a lovely combination.

My mom got the fried catfish over stone-ground grits and sautéed greens with corn. This was a huge portion, and straight-up delicious.

Daughter #2 got the Hog in a Henhouse – chicken breast stuffed with pulled pork and fried with a crispy crust over béchamel-sauced broccoli. Holy moly! Another large portion and the chicken was perfectly cooked. I think this was my favorite.

My dad got the Seafood Heaven entree with blackened shrimp and cream cheese/blue crab nuggets over creamy grits. Yum.

Trying to be somewhat health-conscious, I got the seared tuna over roasted brussels sprouts, garden beets and potatoes. )I can’t believe that as an adult I have discovered a love for beets. Who knew?)

img_7898

All of the food was impressive, but even more surprising was that our bill (for six people) was around $100. Really loved this place, and my parents, who live on that side of town, were thrilled.

Backwoods Crossing is on Mahan Drive out by the I-10 exit and is in the building formerly inhabited by Stinky’s Fish Camp (RIP!) across from the Tallahassee Automobile Museum. (You can also find them on Facebook!)

We are already planning our late spring visit so that we can see what’s in their garden.

(And sorry for the weird camera angles, the fam was rushing me and messing up my shots so that they could start digging in!)

The Sahara Greek and Lebanese restaurant (formerly on E. Lafayette Street in Tallahassee) has been a reliable option for an affordable, delicious lunch. However, the building was definitely aging, and the restaurant needed more seating and parking.

(An aside: the original building used to house a fantastic Pizza Hut when I was growing up. Sit-down Pac-Man game and a jukebox, yes!)

img_7436

They recently moved into a new location, across the street, in the shopping center facing Apalachee Parkway, with New Leaf Market, Cabo’s, Ross, etc., with a lot more room and much more convenient parking.

One big change is that you now have to go to the counter to order before sitting, and they then bring your food out to your table. This change appears to have streamlined their lunch service, and worked great for me as I have been ordering the same thing for years. (Chicken Shawarma, please.)

As you can see below, the Shawarma is always a good choice.

The Chicken Shawarma features well-seasoned and charred chicken with the best tzaziki in town. The Greek salad is solid, though on the small side, and I am completely addicted to their lentil soup. They have great options if you are looking for low-carb or gluten free eating as well.

The Hubs got the gyro platter (yum!) and the hummus is very creamy with a nice garlic kick.

The new location provides more parking, added convenience and plenty of seating space. The new ordering system seemed to make the process much faster, and the staff was very attentive on drinks and making sure we knew about the new procedure. Not fancy, but a great choice for a solid lunch.

West Coast versus East Coast (BURGERS!)

burgers, cheeseburger, Fast food

As a burger fan, I would generally rank actual “fast food” burgers:
1. Whataburger (good burger plus good fries)
2. Wendy’s (decent burger plus ok fries)
3. McDonalds (eh burger, good fries)
4. Burger King (nope)

Honorable mention: Five Guys (good burger and fries, but disqualified due to no drive-thru, so not really “fast food.”)

Unfortunately, we do not have some other national chains that come highly recommended in Florida – most notable In-N-Out.

Recently, I was going to be traveling to Los Angeles for work, and immediately began trying to figure out when I could work in a field trip to In and Out. Woot!

20130303-112552.jpg

Of course, I researched the chain thoroughly…the sacrifices I make! And found the not so “secret” menu. I love this. The idea of the secret menu makes everyone going there feel like an insider. Great marketing.

To be thorough…I got a regular In-N-Out cheesburger and an “Animal-Style” cheeseburger, described as “burger of your choice with hand-leafed lettuce, tomato, a mustard cooked beef patty; add pickle, extra spread with grilled onions.” I also got my fries “well-done” – another secret menu option where they cook the fries to a crispier level. (No, I did not finish all of this…and it was for research!)

20130303-112500.jpg

The regular cheeseburger was a solid entry, the beef tasted solidly beefy and bun was nice – soft without being too mushy. Good ratios and beautiful tomatoes.

But the “Animal-Style” Burger? Heaven. I know I was hungry, but this burger had so much flavor and really knocked my socks off. I generally don’t get mustard or pickles on a burger, but the combination of all the toppings, especially the sauce and grilled onions, was delicious.

20130303-112537.jpg

The well-done fries were the best fries I have had from a drive-thru – crispy, fresh, well-seasoned…ridiculous. And I would say that one serving feeds two – a great deal.

20130303-112528.jpg

The service was really well-executed, with cars lined up down the side street. The window person were unfailingly polite, even though the driver in front of me stalled the entire process by playing on her phone and not paying attention. Loved this place and hope they come to Florida soon.

Cozy Elegance at GW Fins in New Orleans

gw fins

One of my favorite place to visit is New Orleans. The people and the food are both so unique and entertaining. Every time I visit I try to hit local cheap eats and at least one fine dining establishment. Some favorites have been Commander’s Palace, Stella! and this year, it was GW Fins.

GW Fins has popped up consistently on the New Orleans Chowhound Message Boards as one of the best fine dining restaurants in the area, and it was about time I visited them.

We were quickly seated in an immense oval dining room with booths lining the perimeter and a large open dining area in the center. The booths along the wall were higher than the booths in the next circle making it so you could see everyone, but still feel cozy in the booth. I was very impressed by the elegance of the interior, especially being located only a block off of Bourbon Street.

We ordered wine and appetizers, and were served fresh-baked biscuits as our bread. Very good. The appetizers were the crab cakes and stone crab claws. My husband doesn’t like mustard, and LOVED the light, creamy mustard sauce that was provided with the crab claws.

Blackened Swordfish

I got the Blackened Swordfish with mashed potatoes, crispy shrimp, buttered spinach and roasted corn butter. The mashed potatoes were the best mashed potatoes I have ever had in a restaurant – amazing. I honestly could have had the corn butter as a beverage and have been happy. I have never had swordfish blackened before, and I am hoping to try to recreate it at home very soon.

 Jalapeño Glazed Scottish Salmon

The hubs got the Jalapeño Glazed Scottish Salmon with mashed potatoes, thin bean succotash, and roasted corn butter. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the jalapeno glaze gave just the right amount of heat.

The service was exemplary – essentially a relaxed French-style service. The entire place was embodied with a warm, cozy elegance. Once again the Chowhounds have been dead on, GW Fins was one of the best fine dining meals I have had.

Impressive Brisket and Service at Tallahassee Smokehouse

bbq, tallahassee smokehouse

Tallahassee has kind of a sad reputation when it comes to barbecue. For some reason, we do not have a BBQ joint that has been around for 50 years with an old character running the pit – as you would see across Texas or in Memphis.

Thankfully, we have had several new places open up and my hopes have been high for each one. However, so far I haven’t been very impressed. We do have several roadside/food truck establishments that have been filling that gap.

Last week, a new bbq place opened on the north side of town by Hurricane Grill and Wings (in front of Z. Bardhi’s, across from Publix) called the Tallahassee Smokehouse.

I had (thankfully) already found them on Facebook so that I could track their progress, and had sort of forgotten when they were opening. But then I saw a post that Mondays were “kids eat free” and “$6 Martinis” – a dangerous, but enticing combo. 😉

Walking up to the Smokehouse, we could smell smoke emanating from the building – always a good sign for a bbq place. The interior is woodsy and welcoming, with a nice bar over to the side and flat-screen tvs all around. The bar menu has a great selection of beers and martinis.

In the back, you can see a huge smoker working away in an open kitchen type area. We were quickly seated and provided drinks. They had a nice selection of kids beverages and had wikisticks for the girls to play with. The menu actually has a lot more than BBQ, with many sandwich and burger offerings in addition to non-bbq entree choices such as fish and steak. The server was quick to point out that all apps and entrees (including the BBQ) are fresh and made that day. He said the Swordfish Dip is made fresh – cooking the swordfish and chopping it with the other ingredients (definitely trying that next time.) They are open for lunch and dinner every day, and stay open late on Friday and Saturday.

In order to try a variety of the barbecued meats, we got the Three Meat Combo with Brisket, Chopped Pork and Baby Back Ribs (with two sides – Mac ‘n Cheese and BBQ Beans) We also got one kids rib meal, with St. Louis Style Ribs and Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

The brisket was moist and you could pull it apart with a gentle tug, perfectly cooked. The smoke and dry rub really flavored it well. I was impressed especially since I haven’t had good brisket in Tallahassee before. The Baby Back Ribs were good, even though they were a little too saucy for me. I think I liked the St. Louis style a little better – drier with a great bark on them. They also had a variety of sauces to choose from: Original, Sweet, Hot, and Carolina Vinegar.

St. Louis Style Spare Ribs – Kids Meal

The Texas Toast was a hit, but the rest of the sides were a little uneven. The Mac ‘n Cheese was liked by half (this version had corn and peppers in it) and the Garlic Mashed Potatoes were liked by half. They were a little on the gummy side to me – a frequent side effect of making mashed potatoes in mass and over beating them. The beans were more on the light and vinegary side, instead of the traditional sweet and porky southern style – I wasn’t a fan, but it may have been just the surprise of the different style.

The kid’s meals come with dessert. Although we only ordered one, the waiter generously provided one for each girl and even thought ahead to get the fried funnel sticks ordered before we were done with the entrees. Fantastic service, and we ended up having a bill of $30 for four – which is unheard of for us.

Bottom line was that when you have good ribs and brisket (harder degree of difficulty), that matters a lot more to me than the sides. When you add that to the great specials and service, you can bet that we will be back regularly. It may not be a old bbq joint in the traditional sense, but it is a definite upgrade from Sonny’s and a solid addition to the Northeast Tallahassee restaurants.

Medium to Meh at Vertigo Burgers and Fries

burger, vertigo

Tallahassee appears to be finally getting the trendy restaurants that have been spreading around the country. The Food Trucks have arrived, the fancy hotdog place has opened, and now a fancy hamburger joint.

Vertigo Burgers and Fries was recently opened by the Cypress folks, a haute Southern restaurant here in Tallahassee. You can tell a lot of thought and effort was put into creating the different topping options, and to use locally sourced, quality ingredients.

I got the “Round Here” burger that is KBH Farms grass-fed beef burger, SGD green hill cheese, Vidalia onions, locally farmed arugula, and vertigo sauce.

This was a gorgeous burger and I loved the toppings. Unfortunately, the burger was past medium toward well done. The restaurant has a sign at the counter saying that all burgers are cooked medium, which I can appreciate. However, if I can’t order medium-rare, then at least cook it correctly at medium. And with grass-fed beef I would definitely have prefered medium rare to really taste the beef.

On a high note, the onion rings were probably the best I have had in Tallahassee commercially. On a low note, the fries were far from crispy although they looked good.

Even the more browned fries were limp. I feel like if you are going to have “Fries” in the title of your restaurant, they need to have just as much care and thought as the burgers.

I’m not going to rate them on Urbanspoon since they don’t have a “Meh” option, but maybe they will improve as they are a pretty new establishment. I plan on trying again in six months, and will revise this post if they have settled in and brought up the quality.

I do know where I would go if I had an onion ring craving though…

Eat Farm to Table at the Miccosukee Root Cellar

miccosukee root cellar

Last week I was able to take my hubs out on a date night to the Miccosukee Root Cellar. I had heard good things, but had no idea what to expect.

The MRC is located right next to Uptown (who I love) across from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (where I was born, woot!). The outside is unassuming, but I was very impressed with the bright but cozy interior.

We were immediately greeted and provided the menu. They have a delightful selection of craft beers and nice wines. My hubs got an Abita and I got a crisp chardonnay.

MRC calls itself a “farm-to-table” restaurant and lists its providers. I was happy to see Sweet Grass Dairy and Orchard Pond farms (Sidenote: the Orchard Pond CSA is fabulous.)

To begin, we ordered the Charcuteries board. The cured meats included beautiful salame and sausage.

They also provided a Dijon Mustard and a Horseradish Mustard with cute little toasts. I have to say that my fave was the pickled veggies. I may have to go back and see if I can take home a jar of the pickled okra, which was outstanding.

I hated to just try one entree on the menu, as everything looked great, so I asked if the chef could make a sample plate with small portions of featured entrees. To my delight, they created a plate with the MRC Meatloaf, a special Barbecue Brisket, and the Braised Short Ribs. We ordered the bacon mashed potatoes and squash for our sides.

If I could eat that over again, I would. Amazing. The sauces were rich and flavorful. You can taste the chipotle in the BBQ, which was incredibly deep and smoky. And the bacon mashed potatoes were everything I hoped. Pure comfort food.

Mershed Perderders!!

I was full to the gills, but in honor of our date night, we ordered dessert. (We had too!) We ordered the Bay Leaf Creme Brulee, although we were tempted by the variety of homemade organic cookes and ice creams.

The creme brulee had a nice floral/herby note, without being to strong and was light and creamy. Really a nice way to end a meal.

I loved the Miccosukee Root Cellar, and could definitely see us coming back with a group of friends to enjoy live music or just a relaxing happy hour.

Check out their music calendar or the menu on their website or on Facebook!

Hit up VooDoo Dog for Bacon-Wrapped Goodness

hotdog, voodoo dog

Today I decided to correct an unforgiveable wrong, which is that I haven’t tried VooDoo Dog yet. I am a big fan of Dog Et Al for a basic hot dog, but I knew that I needed to visit the new fancy hotdog joint in town.

It is definitely an understatement to call VooDoo Dog “adventurous” by Tallahassee hotdog standards. The menu features such selections as the Abe Frohman (Bueller!!), which is served Chicago-style with tomato, cucumber, onions, dill pickles, sweet relish and celery salt, and the Jefferson, which is a bacon-wrapped dog topped with homemade mac ‘n’ cheese and crushed butter crackers. The basic VooDoo Dog is a hotdog wrapped in bacon, where you decide the toppings.

I shared the Abe Frohman, the Jefferson, and the Tijuana (bacon dog with guacamole and sour cream) with a friend, so we cut them in half. An ideal way to eat through the menu, I must say. 😉

Out of the three dogs, I think the one that surprised me the most was the Abe Frohman. The freshly-made relish was almost refreshing – with the pickle and onion adding a great crunch against the porkiness of the bacon dog. Highly recommend.

The Jefferson was as heavy as you think it will be; ideal for a late night where you need a base of pork and carbs. Very rich.

I really liked the sour cream and guac on the bacon dog, Tijuana. However, it needed another texture to balance all of the creaminess of the toppings – I may ask to add salsa or even the relish from the Frohman next time.

Not pictured are the fries, which may have been my favorite part. They were perfectly sized (not to skinny, not to wide) and salty. One portion of fries would feed two people, plus some to spare.

I love the location and the interior. I know lots of people who like to go there before FSU Basketball games due to the proximity. The quirky interior is decorated with 80s records, memorabilia and photos. The staff was friendly and helpful, noting that they would be putting out a new menu soon to replace the blackboard menu.

VooDoo Dog is a welcome addition to the All Saints/Railroad Square area, and to Tallahassee. I hope to visit again soon to try the burgers, but I feel like I need to abstain from eating for a day before to prepare. I’m sure the Abe Frohman will be calling my name next time I have a fancy hot dog craving.

Give it a try or tell me what your favorite fancy hotdog is…
